Making a heroic effort in self-publishing
The Comic Book Marketplace was a niche publication created by comic book authority Gary Carter. Serving as editor and publisher, with his wife Lisa pitching in as art director, they connected with an enthusiastic fan base—but they had to struggle against the dreaded deadline demon. They had lots of help from volunteer contributors, but rewriting, editing and designing 80 pages of content didn't leave much time for anything else. This looked like a job for designWELL!
First step was a redesign of the magazine, with new prefab templates and some procedural guidelines. We followed up with three days of coaching, ironing out the kinks in editorial, streamlining the production pipeline and improving their efficiency by a third. As a result, the busy couple were able to start taking weekends off, and eventually made enough of a success with CBM to attract an interested buyer.
