Broderbund Software
In 1995, I applied my experience in graphic design, animation and 10 years of high-tech journalism to the design of consumer software. As senior art director of the Print Shop Studio, I managed a great team of artists who worked side-by-side with software engineers to create and update some of the leading productivity products of the time.

For products like Print Shop and PressWriter, we designed both the content and the products themselves, making the software more useful (with projects like newsletters, signs and greeting cards) and more usable (helping folks make easy but sensible design choices). Here is an example of interface development, from sketch and mockup, to final screen.

Interactive design has matured after fifteen years of game and web development. But in 1996, we had to conduct extensive user-testing (and trail and error) to understand what users expected and how we could exceed those expectations. This update of the classic Kid Pix product laid the foundation for many iterations that would follow.

Website design
My experience in software convinced me that less is more in interactive design. These web pages are simple but rigorous variations on a proven architecture. Clear navigation combined with easy-to-read pages makes for satisfying browsing. We hope you agree—this site was built (by designWELL) to the same specifications.
