A new business dawns
In 2009, designWELL begins its second decade in Arts and Entertainment with a new service: Animation (aka Motion Graphics) is a natural outgrowth of our work in other media. Whether narrative or abstract, pictoral or typographic, we'll still continue to design well, but add sound and flurry, signifying... something. For our first project, we created animated sequences featuring "Mr. Sun" for a music video entitled Sunscreen Serenade. Watch for its premiere (for NYC dance company Dura Mater) in the spring.

Ten years, 400 CDs and counting
While we continue to serve a variety of clients with creative services for print, the web and on screen, the backbone of our business is still compact disc packaging. At last count we have designed nearly 400 releases, each with a colorful booklet, tray cards and more. But it will be a while before we can top Superman: The Music, 1978-1988, an 8-disc box set with a 160-page hardcover book, still available from Film Score Monthly.

Limited edition of rare UPA photographs
Inside UPA is a photographic celebration of one of animation's most innovative and experimental studios, UPA Pictures. The book is designed and written by historian Amid Amidi (author of Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in Fifties Animation). Amid selected the photos from the collections of UPA artists, and Joe Sikoryak acted as photo editor, retouching and restoring these fragile mementos of film (and design) history. You can still order the book from the UPA Mavericks website.
“If it wasn't for Joe, I'd have been out of this business long ago.”
–Lukas Kendall, producer & publisher, Film Score Monthly
